so i realize this post is less about the sweater and more about the skirt but that's sort of the point. everyone needs a sweater that they can legit throw on with anything but won't necessarily detract from the outfit as a whole. and that's just what this sweater does, it's a perfect cropped fit and washed out black so goes with everything. including this amaaazing Marc skirt. it's pretty much my fave skirt except what blows is the fact that i look like a complete penguin when i teeter around it.

i have been wanting to recreate Liv Tyler's outfit in Empire Records for TOO long now. i still don't think i'm quite there (i really wish this sweater was a tad more cropped for some of that "above belly button action") and i just don't think my skirt is QUITE short enough. but we're getting there. i actually flipped when i found this sweater. i really do love the colour and i'm DYING to try it out with my new lavender lipstick (yes, we'll get to that soon). despite the whole Empire Records reference, the sweater's just so simple with it's cut and crew-neck, but the subtlety of the colour and the mohair and the half-cardigan stitch... just makes it YUMMY!

my favourite part about this sweater is that the white bits are angora and fluffy. my least favourite part is the fact that i shrunk it by mistake. it's a tough thing to get over, when you shrink one of your favourite pieces of clothing.

hiatus. i know. work is like... work. you know? i'm doing what i love but no one likes long hours and when i get home i just do not feel like blogging. i don't want to force myself to do it, either. i want it to be organic or else what's the point? i have to remind myself why i began this and i know it wasn't to have another chore. anyhow a few things...

firstly, sold my first dreamcatcher on my etsy page! really thrilled about that (even opening my etsy shop is news to any blog followers). right before i moved to Philly my friend put on the huge Open House fundraiser (i'll post pics eventually), and a number of artists and musicians exhibited their work etc. it was a total blast. anyhow, my dreamcatchers were on display their but this is just me rambling, my new shop is called GoldDustDreams.

okay also this is just a random outfit post, not sure how frequent these are going to be any more... the editing got funky, but i like it. had to resort to photo booth because i left my camera chord in brooklyn for literally a month. speaking of which, Halloween pics (yes, Halloween. remember that holiday? the one before Thanksgiving that happened like a month ago?) still yet to be posted.

so yes, i am the last to know that Ari Up has passed away. it's funny because i was just starting to discover my love for the Slits, and realized that they had been touring in recent years. i was getting pretty jazzed actually. Ari passed on the 20th to cancer, she was only 48.

Ari was a German-born singer known for her roll as front-woman for the English punk band, the Slits. the all girl band started up in the late 70s and was hands down the best all-girl band on the scene. Ari's mom, Nora, was the coolest. she was friends with Jim Hendrix, dated Chris Spedding, and married the Sex Pistol's lead singer, John Lydon. their home was a sort of punk stomping ground where many traveling musicians passed on through. growing up in this environment, even learning to play the guitar from Joe Strummer, it's no coincidence that Ari ended up as the front woman of the legendary Stilts. she was fourteen when they formed! she was known for her quirky, wild fashion sense, fusing the reggae and punk styles that were present in her music. she was doing her own thing and even today, there is no one quite like her.

(this is not really directly inspired by Ari but she was on my mind when i put the outfit together this morning. these are my new 80%20 shoes from Urban!).

first off, i just realized that just about every blog post title of this month is a Fleetwood Mac lyric. i suppose i've got Stevie on the brain for i'm actually dressing as the gold dust woman herself for Halloween... well for Saturday that is (still being a clown for Friday). i even recruited my friend Alex to be my Lindsey Buckingham! the greatest part is he needed no convincing. all he asks is that i help outfit him so it looks like a last minute Salvation Army run is in order!

on that note, thought i'd squeeze a classic No Doubt lyric in because this AMAZING collection by Christopher Kane for Versus reminds me of young ms. Stefani... circa Tragic Kingdom.

but seriously... i love what Christopher Kane is doing. he just knows how to cut a dress, you know? this is like the punk rock take on his Spring 2010 line with all the ginghams. the dresses are so wearable but not boring in the slightest. he does cut-outs so well and he's got the wrapping, and pattern mixing DOWN and he has an interesting take on the sheer trend.

you'll notice all these photos are all very close and you don't get a  very good sense of my actual room but there's a reason for that... i'm  still not entirely moved in so i'm simply avoiding boxes and messes that  are not exactly "picturesque."

(my new desk - a vintage sewing table from the 20s!  it was only $49!).

(on the far left is the sewing machine that was in the table.  this is the mantle in my room but we also have one in the living room).

(i got this chest of drawers at the same spot that i got the desk and it was $90! the best part was that it was FULL of things from the 60s... bed sheets, undergarments, a crochet sweater, dishcloths, and best of all, letters! not to mention, rent cheque receipts for like $70??).

yes, i have been m.i.a. for over a week now... apologies, big life  changes.  last wednesday i made the move from brooklyn to philadelphia.   okay, it's a whole of about 3 hours away but to me, this is pretty big.   my life in brooklyn was comfortable.  and not in the boring/monotonous  sort of way, but special and exciting with a general feeling of "this  fits.  this is right."  but i'm growing up and realizing that sometimes  indisputably incredible opportunities come up that you would be crazy to  refuse.  an assistant design position at Urban Outfitters was one such  opportunity.  so here i am.

my new apartment is BONKERS.  the  building was made in the 1830s and has all the original flooring but has  been completely refinished.  however it IS atop a seafood restaurant so  we notice a particular stench a couple times a week.  regardless, it is  SUPER beautiful... i even have one of those small circular bay windows  in my room, and also a fireplace mantle.  my mom and i went shopping for  furniture last week but i wanted to play with the style of the place so  i initially avoided IKEA and opted for some 2nd hand gems. and gems i  found.  pictured to come...

now on a TOTALLY RANDOM note, i bought this lipstick at a DOLLAR  STORE after i almost bought an identical one at Sephora for $19.   reminds me of the shade that Adrienne Shelly wears in the really awkward  early 90s movie, Trust, that i sort of regret watching but loved for  the outfit she wore in the first scene so i guess it was worth it?

new ink from Michelle at Saved Tattoo! it was really a great experience though unbelievably painful. the salon was empty so it was just myself, Michelle, the receptionist and my girl, Joy. i felt totally relaxed because it wasn't as if a million things were going on around me. but DAMN i experience a lot of pain... it's going to be a while before i get another one, that's for sure! i don't know what i would have done without Joy... she held my hand while i crushed it the entire time, and kept my mind on other things by talking which is what she does best.

today i decided to sport my thrifted emerald green turban/cloche. for some reason i thought i could only wear this hat if i were really dressing up but i'm not sure what gave me that idea?  i love dressing myself with any sort of contrast and this one is almost too easy!  i was imagining that i had to save it for some special occasions but seriously, how good would this look if worn with a pair of jeans and a simple sweater?  very Audrey Hepburn.  i, however, was going to a classy play titled Deep Throat.  ever heard of it?  it's sort of a documentary type idea around the adult film of the same title which came out in the 70s.  damn, i was NOT expecting that much nudity.  boobs, sure.  bums?  alright.  but we're talking FULL FRONTAL everything.  it was pretty fantastic.

i really want to wear more cloche's this fall... i have a couple of them but i could use another turban type one!

a new batch of handmade dreamcatchers.  i'd say i have enough now to start selling them.  this all white one is actually for a friend of mine from when i interned at Opening Ceremony.  her name is Kristen Oshiro and she makes this amazing jewelry and when she heard i made dreamcatchers, she suggested we do a little trade.  i was so into the idea and finally we started working on our respective gifts.  i am SO excited to see what she pulls together, she's using a unicorn horn pendant and i couldn't be more excited!!  check out her blog, Cult of Secrets.  i just love the idea of artists trading things just for the sake of trading art, don't you?  no money involved, just an appreciation for each other's craft.

i couldn't be more pumped for this weekend.  yes, it will be bittersweet as it is my last weekend in brooklyn, but at least i'll be leaving with a bang.  friday i'm having a going away house party at my apartment, then saturday morning i'll do some packing, then in the evening i'm getting my second tattoo by the amazing Michelle at Saved Tattoo, then at night i'll be at yet another South Slope Open House where i'll actually have my dreamcatchers on display over the music area.  it's going to look SO cool with little twinkle lights and the works!

YES!). how it works with the 90s matching sets and the somehow over all badass/punk rock vibe, WHO KNOWS?! also, heard Miuccia was partially inspired by hospital scrubs?? well if anyone can pull that off!

most people who know me are aware of my eternal love of rainbows, stemmed from my adoration of miss Rainbow Brite. always been a big fan, and numerous times i have thought about dressing as her for Halloween. many people assume that i have but the truth is, i have never dressed as Rainbow Brite. actually, my first project i ever did for FIT was inspired by the little star girl... and now i am working on my doll collection. so far i have a large Rainbow Brite, and a small Red Butler and Patty O'Green. i don't know why i just LOVE them!!

(i don't know who these people are but something tells me we would get along famously).

(i realize it's creepy that these photots are all of children but the best costumes were made in the 80s and it's before RB had a cult following so pretty much just kids ventured to wear her outfit).

i wore this out to the West Village the other night to meet up with some school friends. we went bar hopping and had great fun! i was in one of those really good moods leaving my apartment because i knew i looked GREAT. you know those night? where you look in the mirror and you're just like, "frick yeah! feeling groovy!" i was also super amped to be wearing my PROENZA SCHOULER skirt circa the Spring 2008 collection. i found it in Beacon's Closet and literally DIED. it was $40 and it fit me. would someone splash cold water at my face?? the other awesome thing is this purse i got for $2 at a thrift store in Vancouver last time i was home. it's real snakeskin on the front and i love the way the colours coordinate with my shirt. i also die for gold hardware.

ps. sorry for the state of my bedroom. my roomies were in the living room so needless to say i decided to use the self timer behind closed doors.

today's outfit. realized through my pining for the Fall that while summer is still here i better grab the hell onto it. got the slutty top from my mom in the mail the other day and decided to base the rest of the outfit around it. i called my mom and was like "hiiii mom, i'm wearing that skanky top that you sent me in the mail!" and she was all, "well i hope you were wearing something under it, it's meant for layering!" and i was like... "duhh i was just going to!" (as said in Cher Herowitz' voice). but i didn't really...

(my expression is truly awkward... embarrassed about that. the boater hat is from a thrift store in Montreal, the top is Press, the silk, striped bra is Sonia Rykiel for H&M, the shorts are vintage Levis, the purse was a birthday gift from my friends Amanda and Chelsey, and the mint green spectators are Top Shop. not sure about the bubblegum tights).

then i trekked out to Queens to hang with my girl Amanda and her room was super jazzed up since the last time i visited.  she would be such an awesome candidate for Style Like U or even the Selby.  i am obsessed with these shoes that she found at Reminiscence so i had to try them on but now i'm planning how i will steal them from her... working on it.

went into Manhattan yesterday to meet someone at the Ace hotel and this is what i wore. people wonder if i feel weird in public wearing something outrageous (really though... i don't think this is a crazy outfit but some people just don't get the shoes), but honestly i usually don't! when people are staring at me, i kind of like it to be honest. it's empowering to know that i've chosen to walk out in public sporting something that not a lot of people would venture to wear. example: today i got off the subway pretty early to meet this person, so i walked into the JC Penny in Manhattan Mall and i-kid-you-not, these two young guys by the escalators were laughing at me! like... people DO that!! i couldn't believe it! so i smiled and waved at them which just added fuel to the fire and they laughed even more. well! i brought a good giggle to these two boring individuals, and that is something i am proud of!

what i'm not proud of though, is that at the end of the day i walked perhaps all the way from the subway to my apartment door with my entire right butt cheek exposed. i don't usually wear thongs with dresses but i was rushing out the door yesterday morning and forgot to switch them up. i realized this mishap right when i got to the door and i reached to pull my purse around and felt my skirt length going higher and higher toward the back until my knuckles grazed skin. i let out an "eek!" and frantically started un-bunching my dress hem while i turned around to see a young Hispanic man who smiled at me as i shoved my hand into my purse and pulled out my keys and threw myself into my apartment. if YOU saw a girl unintentionally exposing her bottom, would you do the right thing??

around April or May my friend Amanda Henderson asked me if i would model for a shoot she had to do for her photo class. the theme was "lighting" and "motion". i think... i could be wrong haha. she told me she got this full length white dress with flowers on the bottom so i suggested we go to Prospect Park. we made our way towards the pond and found this awesome mucky nook. by the end of the shoot i was covered in mud (but those pics were taken on a different camera). these are my faves. this has got to be the prettiest i have felt!

okay, so let's be straight.  Nicolas Cage is UBER annoying.  "there is a map - on the back - of the declaration - of independence."  i pretty much base my life on how i can squeeze in a National Treasure quote into everyday conversation and i essentially flat out refuse to watch movies starring him (with the exception of Adaptation - that movie rocks).  however, i let my "no Nic Cage" rule slide yet again.  when a good friend (like Netflix) is continuously urging you to see a movie that they insist you will love and award 4 stars, sometimes you might compromise.  it's called being "open-minded" and "easy going."  so i watched Valley Girl.  and HOT DAMN.  mr. Cage was one mysterious/dangerous/sexy/sultry-yet-still-talking-like-a-dumbass teenager... but with dreamy bedroom eyes and enough teenage angst to put Avril back in Napanee, Ontario (population 5,000).  very cute movie... typical 80s teen movie, aka "we can't be together because my friends don't like you/i'm too poor/school is my priority!" and all that jazz.  but our two badass Hollywood boys that come to bust a party in the Valley are damn cute and with rad style.  why Randy goes for Julie (BORE ALERT) i have no clue.  but it's cute regardless.  and her quinoa-eating, pot-smoking, yoga-practicing hippie parents are delightful to boot!

if i hadn't graduated in May, i would be back to school as of last week.  i thought at this point i would have a job but no such luck!  so i have decided to make use of my funemployment.  one such way, is by tie dying the shit out of some of my white clothing.  i'd actually been planning for ages to tie dye this white moto jacket.  i got it at H&M during my first trip to NYC back when i was i think 14 or 15?  i was going through this "punk rock" phase and bought myself the jacket and a pair of skinny jeans (before anyone in Vancouver was wearing them.  ohmygoshsocoolandindieandcuttingedge!).  anyhow, since then i forgot it in my friends car and then it ended up in her trunk along with her takeout pesto pasta and put her in the driver's seat of Rhonda (rest.in.peace) and my jacket came out with a few oil stains.  but miss Kara, being awesome, tried her best to get it out but it wasn't quite the same!  so THANK YOU Kara!  without you i would never have been inspired to do THIS:

i first noticed her work years ago when one of my classmates posted some pictures that she posed in for Nadirah. i fell in LOVE with these photos and only just found her website the other day. enjoy!

in celebration of graduating and being DONE WITH SCHOOL (at least for now), i decided to rearrange my room. i figured it would be an easy way to reconstruct my bedroom as a place of peace and comfort, and somewhere to chill out, and erase that sense of being a workroom and reminder of those many all-nighters i endured while still in school. during this process i realized i was so over the whole poster thing, and would need to take down my Trainspotting and Breakfast Club posters. that's just so teen bedroom, no? so now i'm left with some silk-screened concert artwork, a crazy awesome needle-point of a peacock, and a map of Green-wood Cemetery. so now i figure my walls are pretty boring... i plan to paint one or two walls (any suggestions for colour? keep in mind i WILL have to paint it back after). ALSO, i have about a million cones of yarn that i think i could have a lot of fun with. i was thinking that above my bed i could put about 15 nails in the wall in the form of a rainbow and put my yarns on those. would that be totally awesome or look super awkward?? but i also would love one really awesome piece of original artwork which leads me to the actual purpose of my post haha. i've been looking for illustrators that i could possibly buy a print or something from and a came across these 4 artists that i am now minorly obsessed with:

school is over.  therefore i am back and ready to blog.

a few months ago i got a notification on facebook to become a fan of this site, Style Like U.  thinking it was just another lookbook.nu (would someone please explain how all these people have these professional photos taken of themselves??), i sort of overlooked it.  then i started to notice people linking different editions to their pages and was intrigued.  i was totally impressed when i started to explore the site and realized that it was simply a site with a great appreciation for personal style.  it's not all about fashion, trends and fads, but truly a look into someone's wardrobe and their personal attachment and love of their own individual pieces in their closet.  this, to me, is what i love the most about "fashion."  in fact, it's not even a love of fashion, it's an obsession with clothing and personal style.  i have a truly crazy attachment to some of my clothing and the stories of how i found them, how i bargained for them, and what they have been through all contribute to the love i have for the items in my closet.  on Sunday my roomies and i had a stoop sale and it was REALLY difficult to get rid of some things.  despite whether i wear them or not!  on the other hand, seeing them all on the pavement sort of put things into perspective for me a tad...

i was visiting the site today and saw the name Stephen Jenkins on the list of past closets.  being the lead singer of Third Eye Blind, one of my fave bands, dating back to THIRD GRADE, i was super intrigued.  i also thought, what an unusual contender, not being in the "fashion limelite" at all.  it was super interesting hearing him talk about his clothing, and how he thinks you should buy a few amazing things and just "wear the shit out of them".  not really MY perspective on shopping but perhaps i should take note!  he also talks about how some of his favourite clothes are the one's that's first reactions are "are you actually wearing that?!".  i love that.

i might be a little MIA for the next week or two! the reason being... my first senior collection garment has to be 95% done by Wednesday of next week! and my 2nd (Cotton Inc) garment has to be 75% done. wooopie! i have a lot left to do... but on that note! another reason i might not be spending as much time on my personal blog is that i've been made a contributor for the newly established FIT BFA Fashion Show blog!! it's been really fun thus far, i've pretty much just been updating it whenever i have made some notable progress on my garments.

now this is exciting on it's own, but the best part is that one of my girls, Krickie (who also has a kickass blog, freakybananakins), has been interning at Refinery29, and told them about our site! Krickie was granted permission to write a post about us, and from there we've gotten even more press! a day or two later, NBC New York wrote about us, and yesterday, the Sundance Channel's Full Frontal Fashion, did another blurb!

a while back i posted about my Fall 2011 collection, The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, with a few pics from my sketchbook etc.  this semester is our first without an actual art and design class, but we're using our already created portfolio to develop an "E-portfolio".  here are a couple of pieces i've worked on.  the video below is actually embedded into the image above it, but i can't for the life of me figure out how to actually post that "interactive file" on the blog.  ehhh i'll figure it out eventually.  you can see the video bigger here:  the girl who loved wild horses slideshow.

this here (below) is another assignment we had. sort of a "leave behind" meant to kind of give you a taste of my style and skillz. the original artwork and designs were actually done a year ago in my Junior year, but i still really like the project! i think it was like during the 80s that someone realized that when you play the film of the Wizard of Oz muted, and then listen to the Dark Side of the Moon record at the same time, the visuals of the movie combined with the music on the record correspond in this crazy seemingly intentional fashion. so despite the fact that i have never actually done this (i know, i know, Holden Caufield! i am a phony!), that whole concept was my inspiration behind this collection. and they call it Dark Side of the Rainbow (hence the name of my collection), and other names for it are the Dark Side of Oz and The Wizard of Floyd (a personal fave).

in my humble opinion, Broken Bells is the most incredible collaboration since Gwen Stefani and Eve.  in fact, it far surpasses Lil' Mama and Avril Lavigne and i'll even venture to say that Kid Rock and Weezy got nothing on this.  and that is saying something.

i have been a fan of James Mercer since the early days of the Shins (circa Oh, Inverted World and Chutes Too Narrow which are without a doubt in my top 10 albums of all time), and a few years ago discovered Flake Music which existed before the Shins (check it out, for the love of the universe!).  and now, i have been introduced to Broken Bells, a combo of the Shins' James Mercer and Gnarls Barkley's Danger Mouse. it is exactly what you'd expect:  an explosive yet magical chemical reaction between a delightful indie pop, smart-melody-making, quirky lyric inventor and a hip hop, Grammy-award winning, beat dropping, multi-instrumentalist and production mastermind.

this first track is their first single and the second one has been in my head all week long.  it was a complete surprise to see that Mercer was doing the lead vocals on this track because i had just assumed it was someone else in the band!

saw the Runaways on Sunday night! i think it's still limited distribution but should be in theatres everywhere pretty soon. as soon as i heard Dakota Fanning was playing a skanky/coke-head/rockstar, i was all like, "hell yeah, Joy, i'll see that with yah!". now while it was no cinematic genius and Kristen Stewart still gets under my skin just as much as the next greasy teenager, the shoes were the stars of the show. i kid you not, those were some badass platforms. inspired by the flick, i created an "If I Were a Runaway Today" outfit collage... I seriously do not feel like identifying where i got each piece since it seriously took me so long to find everything, and put it all together, so if you have any inquiries, well... inquire! (woah, serious italics there).
